Files and documents

Warn your user that they will be downloading/opening a file.

Because your user's natural assumption is that a link goes to a web page, you should indicate when a link will open an attached file or document. Write (PDF) or (Word) or whatever is appropriate in brackets after the link. If the file is large indicate this so that people with poor internet connections or on mobile devices will know that it will take time to download the file.

Do not use spaces in filenames of files and documents which are uploaded to your website.  This leads to '%20' in web addresses which is confusing.
