As folders and pages are added to Plone they will appear in the side navigation.  There are some folders which you will want to keep hidden.

e.g. Julie adds two new folders to her site, a folder for Images and one for Documents. She wants them to be hidden folders for her to keep site related stuff in but both folders immediately appear in the main navigation.

Plone has a useful option that allows you to exclude items from the main navigation. This can be done for most Plone content items as follows:

  • Go to the Edit tab for the item you want to exclude.
  • At the top of the page you will see an extra set of tabs for setting basic properties.
  • Click the Settings tab to bring up the Settings panel.

  • The Settings panel has fields that may vary a bit from content type to content type, but generally there are input fields controlling whether or not the item appears in navigation, or if there are comments allowed, and other similar controls. The option we're interested in is Exclude from navigation.

  • Check the box next to Exclude from navigation, then click Save at the bottom of the page.
  • You will be taken back to normal view the content item you were editing.
  • Look at the left navigation and you will see that your item is still there - did it work? Yes, your item is only still showing because you are viewing it. As soon as you move off the item onto another one in the navigation your item's entry will disappear.

To view a folder after it has been hidden:
