Creating an RSS feed from Plone content (Syndication)

Plone has a useful feature called Syndication. Syndication in this sense means making the contents of a plone folder into an RSS feed. The advantage of this being that you can then subscribe to this feed using using a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox, or by using one of the many other tools that are available on the web for viewing RSS feeds.

To turn the contents of a folder into an RSS feed all you need to do is:

  • First of all you need manage rights over a folder to be able to enable syndication.
  • When you log in to your site go to the folder on which you wish to enable syndication and click on the Syndication tab at the top of the page.
  • You will be presented with a screen that looks like the one below.

Using the syndication tab in Plone

  • Click on Enable Syndication. Next you will be presented with a configuration screen that looks like this:

Syndication configuration interface

  • This interface allows you to control the various aspects of your RSS feed including the Update Period and Update Frequency (how often it checks for new content added to your folder), and the update base (the date from which your update checking will begin). You also get to control the maximum items that will display in a person's RSS feed at any one time.
  • When you have finished configuring your RSS feed click save.
  • The address of your RSS feed will be the URL of your folder with /RSS on the end e.g. http://www2.le.ac.uk/myfolder/RSS.
  • When people click on a link in their RSS feed of your folder they will be taken to the item in that folder - which means it is essential that you Publish the items you want to have seen in your feed.
