Your new Students’ Union is on its way

On Monday 5 March we start work on the redevelopment of our Percy Gee Building, which will be complete in time for the start of the 2019 academic year.

This major facelift of the East Wing will transform the centre of campus and create a fantastic new entrance to our Students’ Union building.

As part of our commitment to improving the student experience, we are extending and enhancing the eastern wing of the Percy Gee Building, home to our Students’ Union, as part of our continued improvement of the student experience.

What’s in store?

We are committed to improving and increasing the facilities already on offer at the Percy Gee Building. To achieve this, our proposals include plans to:

  • Deliver a brand new spacious food court
  • Provide alternative facilities and high quality multi-use spaces.
  • Establish a direct link between the vibrant atria space already within Percy Gee and the newly completed Fielding Johnson Square.

While Queen’s Hall will not be retained in its current form, a more useful multi-purpose space with the same floor space will be included in the renovations, alongside the existing space for the Scholar bar for music and performance.

Timescales

The project will start on the 5 March and throughout the project you will still have access to the Square and food outlets, along with the Students’ Union offices. Some offices will move and we’ll post more information when we have it.

Some general timescales for the project are available below, we will share firm dates when we have them confirmed. Please be aware that these dates may be subject to change.

  • Removal of the existing interiors (soft strip) begins 5 March 2018
  • Main Demolition – March–May 2018
  • Foundation being created – May–July 2018
  • Steel Frame installed – July–October 2018
  • Construction of the exteriors (curtain walling) – October 2018–February 2019
  • Interior fit-out – February–August 2019

During the works

We have been working with the Students' Union and timetabling to ensure that student groups are catered for and will ensure that no noisy work will take place around exam periods. Some services have moved as follows.

  • Education Unit – is now in the main SU Office (on the balcony opposite Starbucks in the SU) – opening times remain 10am–4pm Mon-Fri
  • SULETS – is on the opposite balcony in the Here for You office
  • The three remaining clinics – Headspace, Choices, ISVA will be running from the Mezzanine floor in the Charles Wilson building
  • Open Mind is an online based referral system and then the meetings with students will also run from the Mezzanine floor, Charles Wilson.

If you want to raise any issues during the works then please contact the ECS Service Desk on 0116 252 2319 or ecs-service@le.ac.uk
