Support Leicester’s students in sporting contest

Varsity – the biggest University sporting contest in the city between the University of Leicester and De Montfort University – is back for 2020.

Over 50 University of Leicester sports teams compete in 27 disciplines between Thursday 19 March and Wednesday 25 March.

The competition started in 2000, with Leicester undefeated overall so far.

Show your support for Team Leicester by:

  • Meeting your Varsity captains, enjoy refreshments, get merchandise, and challenge your friends at table tennis and basketball, at our Varsity launch event. It’s Thursday 19 March, between 3.30pm-5.30pm in the Charles Wilson Sports Hall.
  • Cheering on the women’s and men’s rugby union teams at Welford Road stadium on Thursday 19 March, from 6.00pm. Tickets are just £6 and can be purchased on the Students’ Union’s website.
  • Going along to as many fixtures as you can – find them on the Varsity website.

Head of Sport and Active Life, Matthew Weir, said: “Varsity is the sporting highlight of the year. All our teams have been training hard in preparation and are looking forward to proudly representing the University and Team Leicester. We encourage all staff and students to go along to matches and show their support – the friendly rivalry with De Montfort University makes the atmosphere at Varsity matches particularly special. And obviously we are hoping to continue our run and retain the Varsity trophy for the 20th consecutive year.”
