Providing toys for Christmas.

For the past two years, staff member Richard Gamble has led an appeal at the University on behalf of local charity Toys on the Table to arrange presents for children who wouldn’t otherwise get any to open on Christmas morning. Richard is asking for support with the 2020 campaign.

Toys on the Table is a Charity working in the Leicester and Leicestershire area, which provides new toys and gifts at the holiday season for those children, regardless of faith, who might otherwise not receive anything. They might be in families that are really struggling financially, or they might be in care homes or at special schools. The charity collects the toys and wraps them making sure that they give the gifts to the right age groups.

Because of the circumstances of COVID-19, this year Richard is collecting cash donations via his Justgiving page, in order to buy the toys and donate to the charity. He is aiming to raise £500.

Richard says: “In 2018 I felt compelled to help and the first appeal managed to collect over 350 gifts, last year we collected nearly a thousand toys and gifts, all donations came from the wonderful staff and students of Leicester university, and I had the help of some very special people and the backing of estates and campus services, staff and wellbeing and print services. It was very overwhelming and very humbling to be involved in something so successful and to know that many children and young people would get Christmas presents donated by the University.

“This year more than ever Toys on the Table needs our support, more people are struggling to make ends meet and I feel for parents who are dreading Christmas. I want to help as many people as possible to put smiles on kids’ faces; we take so much for granted.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nishan Canagarajah is supporting the campaign, saying: “I am delighted to see Richard’s enthusiasm and willingness to give up his own time to support charities and work for the benefit of others. It makes a huge impact and is the embodiment of being a Citizen of Change.

“The pandemic has had a detrimental impact on many charities and now more than ever they require generous support. His efforts are commendable and will be invaluable to Toys on the Table and the many children that it supports.”

You can donate via Richard’s Justgiving page.
