We would like to send our congratulations to the first cohort of Dalian University of Technology students who, on Friday 25 June, graduated.

The Leicester International Institute, Dalian University of Technology was jointly established on 29 March 2017 by Dalian University of Technology (DUT) in China and the University of Leicester (UOL) with the approval of the China Ministry of Education. The purpose of Dalian is to advance the exchange of culture, science, engineering and technology between China and the United Kingdom, promoting the development of education in both countries and facilitating academic collaboration between Dalian University of Technology and the University of Leicester.

We spoke to two students, Runze Chen and Wenqi Liu, who graduated on Friday about their experiences studying at Dalian, and what they learnt while there. Runze, who studied Chemistry spoke briefly about his experiences: The University of Leicester attaches great importance to our academic integrity, which has helped us to become down-to-earth people. Even though our institute is more than 8,000 kilometres away from the main campus of the university, promises concerning teaching quality and facilities were all true.

Dalian’s students are officially registered to DUT and UOL simultaneously, and can access the library, learning and other academic resources over the internet. All teaching and assessment of the Core Curriculum is carried out in English by teachers from both universities and using UOL’s academic materials.

Runze continued: During my college years, I could feel the love from UOL teachers and their concern for us as students. As for me, I sincerely love University of Leicester as well as my teachers and classmates.

On 5 September 2017, Dalian welcomed its first cohort of 168 students, offering three undergraduate degree programmes in the subject areas of Applied Chemistry (corresponding with the programme of chemistry at UOL), mathematics (corresponding with the programme of mathematics at UOL) and the process equipment and control engineering mechanical engineering (corresponding with the programme of mechanical engineering at UOL).

Wenqi highlighted that growing up as one of the first cohorts of students of Dalian was a special experience. “When I first came here, Dalian was still very rudimentary, with less than 200 students and some teachers. After four years of development, more and more students came and the facilities at the institute became more and more complete.

The institute provides us with a good educational environment, coupled with high-quality teachers and advanced education concepts from both China and Britain, which helped us quickly improve our English and professional qualities. Thank you to the institute for the four years of training, and I truly hope it continues to grow better and better.

Dr Baocheng Li, the International Partnership Manager, was present through Dalian’s first cohort’s academic journey, commending the recent graduates for their hard work and effort over the past few years: “Runze and Wenqi are two outstanding students. This group of students went through unexpected challenges due to the global pandemic; and through four years of hard work and persistence they graduated on Friday 25 June 2021 with dual degrees from UOL and DUT and with extraordinary performances and achievement.

Many of Dalian’s first cohort won prizes at the local, national and international level. As President and Vice-Chancellor, Nishan Canagarajah, said in his welcome address at the inaugural graduation ceremony, “that is a tremendous success story and speaks volumes the quality of education you have received and experience you have had. The vision we had from the start to create a world class collaboration has come to fruition today.” These students are creating a remarkable and glorious page in the DLI history with an extraordinary impact on society and the market.

Congratulations to our first Dalian graduates of 2021! We can’t wait to see the changes you make in the world!
