Two University of Leicester students are celebrating after receiving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Alice James (second year Law) and Simon Doughty (third year Pharmaceutical Chemistry) were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award at Buckingham Palace.

Both Alice and Simon started their DofE award before university but have continued throughout their time at the University thanks to our status as a licenced centre. This status, which we gained two years ago, allows students to start their DofE award at the University of Leicester or continue with an award that they may have started at school or college.

The presentation at Buckingham Palace gardens celebrated the achievements of around 1,500 young people from across the UK who have all spent 12-18 months challenging themselves to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

All Gold Award holders have had to volunteer in their local community, learn a new skill, improve at a physical activity, plan and undertake an expedition and spend five days working away from home.
