Rajveer Kaur has received a place on the International Citizen Service scheme.

Rajveer Kaur is travelling to Kenya in June to support local communities as part of the Voluntary Service Overseas International Citizen Service programme.

The final year criminology student will live with a local family in Machakos County, Kenya, and get involved in community project work, working with young people to help them to recognise and achieve their ambitions.

Only 58 per cent of people in Machakos County have a primary level of education, with 61 per cent living in poverty.

Volunteering has been a large part of Rajveer's life, with her previously being involved in helping to fight homelessness, resettle offenders from prison back into the community, and supporting the elderly.

Rajveer said: "One of my key aims in life is to help to build a fairer and just society. As young people we are best placed to tackle poverty and to change the world for the future.

If you're interested in volunteering, follow your heart, believe in yourself, and never give up."

The placement is run by Voluntary Service Overseas, a development charity fighting poverty through volunteering.
