Student awarded first prize by Royal Entomological Society
The Bombardier Beetle may not be the first superhero to spring to most people’s minds but PhD student Jonathan Smith has written a short essay to ensure the multi-talented insect gets the recognition it deserves. The Bombardier Beetle possesses the bizarre ability to aim it’s bottom and fire a 100°C biochemical spray at its predators, a talent which could lead to the discovery of new methods of containing explosions.
The humorous piece ‘Bombardier beetles: Superheroes of the insect world’ can be read on the Royal Entomology Society’s website.
Congratulations to Jonathan from everybody at the University of Leicester!
