Seminar with Syrian Academics

A seminar discussing higher education in Syria will be held on Wednesday, led by two visiting Syrian academics.

Dr Sulaiman Mouselli and Mrs Alia Omran, two Syrian academics, are visiting the University with the support of the British Council. They will be discussing the state of higher education in Syria. Their aim is to raise awareness of the situation in their country and to build positive ties with UK institutions.

The University of Leicester will be one of five institutions they visit. Their lecture will build on the experience of Al-Fanar Media and the British Council, who previously held a conference in Beirut discussing how to improve education opportunities within Syria.

Roughly four million Syrians have become refugees and six million have become displaced since the conflict. Much attention has been focused on refugees but little effort has been made to support displaced youth and professors, whose access to resources, international collaborators, and ability to travel to attend international meetings has been severely weakened.

This lecture provides a timely look at what can be done to ensure that higher education in Syria is able to progress.

The seminar will be taking place at 12:30pm on Wednesday 27th February in Ken Edwards Building – Lecture Theatre 2. It is free and open to all students.
