Salwa has been presented with the Frank May Cup for engaging in volunteer work alongside her studies.

Salwa Almayouf, a PhD Researcher in the University’s leading Department of Genetics, has been awarded the Frank May Cup.

The valuable silver cup was donated to the University in 2008 by Dr Frank May and is awarded to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to the University and wider community through volunteering on a regular basis.

Salwa has demonstrated passion and motivation to making a positive impact in the student and wider community through her commitment to volunteering.  Whilst studying for her PhD in Genetics, Salwa has been volunteering at a Cancer Research UK charity shop every Saturday for the past 6 months.  Alongside this, Salwa has been a volunteer for the University of Leicester Cancer Research UK Society and Leicester Marrow Society. Notably, Salwa also supported last year’s hugely successful Leicester Heroes event which broke the record for the most people signed up to the stem-cell donor’s register in a single day.

Salwa’s dedication to improving the lives of those who suffer with cancer has personal ties. Salwa previously worked in a cancer hospital for five years and developed a deep empathy for the patients. Having been close to sufferers of the disease has motivated Salwa to support and work towards improving the lives of cancer patients.

“I am very honoured and thankful for being recognised by winning the prestigious Frank May Cup award for volunteering, especially when I have been volunteering for a cause that is personal and matters a lot to me” said Salwa. “Volunteering has been a rewarding experience that I have learnt and gained so much from, I highly encourage everyone to take part”.

This year over 1000 University of Leicester students have been volunteering in the local community in a range of opportunities, many of which have been brokered by the Career Development Service. Volunteering is also just one of the many ways in which students can gain experience as part of their Leicester Award. This personal development programme supports students to gain experiences and reflect on what they have learnt, developing their confidence, resilience and decision making skills to help them realise their potential.
