We are pleased to announce the two books chosen for this year’s Read at Leicester giveaway to students and staff.

Here at Leicester we love a good read. We appreciate the power of books and reading to bring people together, to challenge our perceptions and enrich our lives.

Read at Leicester is an annual campaign aimed at getting students and staff to engage with reading. We are looking to create a University-wide shared reading experience, using literature to bring people together.

This is the third year that we’ve run Read at Leicester and for the first time, we’re giving away two books which were chosen by staff and students. The books reflect themes that are vitally important to us as a University community.

The books

  • The Long Road to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. This Arthur C Clarke science fiction prize-winner takes a look at gender issues and politics through the lens of an action packed feel good space opera. It was originally published through a Kickstarter campaign and is a powerful antidote to these troubled times
  • The Good Immigrant brings together emerging British BAME writers, poets, journalists and artists to confront issues around race and immigration. The collection of essays explores why immigrants come to the UK, why they stay, what it means for their identity if they’re mixed race, where their place is in the world, and what the effect is on the education system.

Through the year

We’re planning lots of activity around Read at Leicester, including book clubs, events supporting Black History Month, book swaps and much more. We’re also looking at ways to link themes of the books to ongoing projects. Keep an eye on our announcements to get the latest news.

Where to get your copy

First year students will receive a copy at matriculation or in the Fabulous First Year marquee. Members of staff or returning students can visit the library from Monday 24 September and ask for a copy of either book.
