As part of UK Black History Month, this live online event with a panel of experts on race, sport and popular culture will discuss how race shapes the experiences of Black athletes throughout their careers and beyond.

Taking place online on Wednesday 28 October, 2:30pm-4.00pm, the event is inspired by Education, Retirement and Career Transitions for Black Ex-Professional Footballers: 'From being idolised to stacking shelves' by University of Leicester lecturer Dr Paul Ian Campbell, published earlier this year.

Dr Campbell said: "The book is the first to explicitly explore black ex-professional footballers' career transitions into retirement. It digs into their experiences in education, the factors which often block them from gaining work as football coaches and force them into the world of mainstream work. It also explores the loss of status, logistical support and earning power after retirement, often translate into experiences of grief and depression once their sporting careers have ended. Their stories provide insight into how experiences of retirement impact on male identity, sense of masculinity and mental health, and how these experiences are complicated by race."

As part of the event, attendees will have a chance to put questions to Paul and the rest of the panel: Dr Natalie Darko (Academic Lead and Research Fellow at the Centre of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Health, University of Leicester), Prof Ben Carrington (University of Southern California) and Ms Anika Lesley-Walker (University of Bolton).
