A flexible and inclusive education for all

The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound effect on all of our lives, including how students across the country study at university. We have already come a long way together in a short time, and now we are fully focused on delivering an enriching, high-quality and safe education for you all in 2020/21.

While we respond to the situation presented by COVID-19, we want take the opportunity to think beyond short-term solutions and look forward to making a real and positive difference to the way you study with us next year and beyond.

To deliver our campus-based courses safely in the new academic year, we will build a dual-delivery model of on-campus and online education. At the heart of this model, we want to deliver a fun, exciting, supportive and safe campus experience for you all. The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is always paramount and we will work hard to open up as much face-to-face teaching as soon as it is safe to do.

The amount of face-to-face teaching we can safely offer is likely to evolve as we approach and move through the 2020/21 academic year, and we will adapt our delivery as conditions change.

Our courses in 2020/21 will be campus-based and very distinct from our traditional distance learning provision, but will use and build upon more than 25 years of existing expertise and experience in this area to ensure our education has the resilience it will need in a rapidly changing situation.

We are bringing our new approach together under the banner of ignite, where the fundamental aim is to provide you with a high-quality education that is flexible enough to allow you to easily switch between on-campus and online learning, as conditions require. We also want this flexibility to open up new ways for you to learn and engage with your courses, providing you with options to help manage your busy lives.

As we progress towards a more flexible education, we want to ensure it is inclusive and will lower barriers to access and attainment for all of our students. Our work to develop our education in 2020/21 will take place as we build towards the launch of the Leicester Institute for Inclusion in Higher Education this autumn. The Institute will help us to develop and incubate new ideas and initiatives, and, most importantly, it will help us better support those who are fighting through adversity to forge their own path to a better future.

Ignite, an agile and flexible mix of online and on campus teaching and learning, will mark the beginning of our journey towards a new vision of higher education. We want you to be among the first students to benefit from having much more choice in how, where and when you study.

We will blend the best of face-to-face and online learning to allow you to find new ways to engage with your course and get the most out of your University experience for you. The way forward will, of course, not come without challenges, but we will never lose commitment to our goal of building a better education for you all.

I look forward to taking this journey with you.
