Viktoria - making her ambitions a reality

Viktoria Figula-Dera graduated from the University of Leicester with a BSc in Criminology. She expected to study at Nottingham Trent but when her A-level results were better than expected she decided to find a place at a university with higher entry criteria. After researching which universities were most notable for the subject of Criminology, she chose the University of Leicester.

She said: “I do not regret my decision! During my time here I was able to study a subject I love and really focus on specific areas that interest me the most, for example, violent crime.

“I studied the crime of rape within my dissertation by investigating why only 17% of rape victims in England and Wales report to the police.”

Viktoria’s work has been rewarded with a First Class Honours degree, the Scarman Prize for the best dissertation of the year and the BSc Criminology Best Student Award.

Her next steps are to join UNLOCKED – a graduate scheme which involves studying towards a Master’s degree while working for the Ministry of Justice as a full-time, fully-paid prison officer.

The recruitment process for UNLOCKED was very competitive. Viktoria prepared well for the process, she said:

“I knew that I wanted to join this scheme for a long time and made sure I prepared myself well. Simple things like reading UNLOCKED’s goals and aspirations online have helped me to show the recruitment officers that I am a worthy candidate.

“During the programme I am expecting to develop key transferable skills that I can utilise in the workplace. I know working and studying at the same time may be difficult therefore my time planning skills will be put to good use.”
