Supporting key workers through daily walks

With most of our travel plans on indefinite hold, we’re left to daydream about summer holidays that might have been!

Our Department of Modern Languages in the School of Arts is also feeling the longing to travel and so last week a group of staff and students, accompanied by their children, members of their families and friends from across the UK – 20 people altogether –, started a virtual walk around Europe to raise money for NHS Charities Together.

Combining a love of travel with a daily dose of exercise sounds like the perfect way to get fit, support key workers, and daydream of destinations yet to explore. Dr Emma Staniland is one of the organisers, she said: “We wanted to collectively do something to raise money for our amazing NHS during this time of crisis. But as modern linguists and global citizens also to show solidarity with our friends and neighbours abroad.

"We have set ourselves the challenge of a virtual walk around Europe. Each step is earning money to support the incredible work carried out by NHS key workers - many of whom come from countries experiencing the same worrying time as us in the UK. We are so grateful for their being a part of our society.

“The ultimate goal is to finish in Madrid on May 15th, walking via France and Italy - that's over 4.8 million steps in total.”

So far the team has collectively walked 1,950,546 steps, or 1560.4km in 8 days. And more importantly, they’ve raised £1220 for NHS Charities Together so far. You can make a donation via their JustGiving page.

And for something to inspire your getaway daydreams during lockdown, take a look at Dr Michelle Harrison's brilliant Instagram updates with pictures of the teams destinations, and information about the regions and towns they are passing through en route.

The walking team are: modern languages students Hannah Bunting and Kayleigh Jennings; ML staff Martín Agnone, Clara Garavelli, Maria Guarnieri, Michelle Harrison, James Illingworth, Liz Jones, Simon Lambert, Corinne Pelton, Marc Ripley, Emma Staniland, Simona Storchi, Imogen Wiltshire. And friends Matt Coombes, Laura Devaynes, Miranda Haigh-Churchill, Eve Harrison, Lucia Hughes and Marion Krauthaker.

A special mention goes to Alex, Amy and William who have been contributing steps along with their mums!
