The Marrow Society responded to Anthony Nolan’s coronavirus emergency appeal through taking part in their national challenge, Miles for Marrow.

Miles for Marrow encourages participants to move – such as by walking, cycling or running an extra 26 miles during April. So far, Leicester Marrow Society have run 520 miles and cycled 735 miles, bringing their total to 1255 miles: the equivalent distance from the university to Tirana, Albania.

Third year medical student and Marrow Society Vice President, Helen Zakhour, commented: “What started off as a 26 mile challenge between us has quickly taken off. We completed the equivalent of three marathons on just the first day. I am very proud of the club’s effort and support and can’t wait to see our total distance at the end of the month”

Kiran Bhavra, a first year medical student, who is running every day in April said: “I want to raise awareness for all the amazing things Anthony Nolan do and the importance of signing onto the stem cell register. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, I want to support my peers and fundraise alongside marrowers at Leicester to raise more funds, as well as staying healthy at home.

Anthony Nolan is a UK charity who match blood stem cell and bone marrow donors to people with blood cancers and blood disorders who need lifesaving transplants.

Funds from Miles for Marrow will go towards a 24-hour donation hub at Heathrow Airport to allow lifesaving stem cell donations to continue.

Helen added: “Anthony Nolan need an extra £10,000 each month during the coronavirus crisis to keep its amazing work going. Fundraising is vital for the continuation of the charity”

“Anyone can join in with the challenge – you do not need to be a member of the Marrow Society. For example, the University of Leicester Boat Club have already got involved. We just ask that you donate or share the JustGiving link

“If you’re thinking creating your own fundraising challenge, make it accessible from home, and create an online page. Once you have done this publicise, publicise, publicise! Get it on all your social media pages and get people sharing the link”
