Make your honorary degree nominations now!

Every year we ask our staff and students for their ideas on who should receive an honorary degree. Now it’s your chance to have your say.

An Honorary Degree is the highest honour that the University can bestow. In recent years we have bestowed these prestigious awards on such luminaries as Sandi Toksvig, Tim Peake, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Professor Sir John Savill and the President of Malta. You can see a full list of previous honorands here.

We’re asking all our staff and students to propose candidates for the next set of honorary degrees. The nominees should have made an outstanding contribution on a local, national or international scale. This may be to the advancement of their discipline or field of work, the community, society or to the University. It is desirable to have a connection to Leicester but whether or not this is the case, the candidate must be an outstanding individual and widely recognised in their own field.

There’s no nomination form but you must make a full case, covering your detailed reasons for the nomination, a brief CV (to the extent that this is possible without consulting the candidate), any background information that may be useful (eg, Wikipedia or Who's Who entry) and the candidate’s contact details.

Make a nomination by 6 September

Nominations should be made by 6 September 2019. Please email Nigel Siesage with the subject line “Honorary Degree nomination”. Please don’t inform your nominee that you are putting them forward. All nominations will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Board in the Autumn Term, and it should be noted that the number of awards made in any year is very limited.

The Board is committed to ensuring that the awards take full account of the University’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, so you are encouraged to take this into account in considering who to put forward, not only in terms of gender but also race and other protected characteristics.
