Come along to these events to support our University of Sanctuary initiative

Last year, we launched an initiative to be recognised as a University of Sanctuary, which is an institution that ‘Offers good practice in welcoming asylum seekers and refugees into the university community and fostering a culture of welcome and inclusion for all.’ You can read more about this here.

As part of this work, we would like to invite you to attend the following events in order to support the cause, and to find out more.

Leicester Writers’ Showcase launch of Malka Al-Haddad’s poetry collection: 21 February

Malka is an asylum seeker from Iraq and she is part of the first group of asylum seekers and refugees who were offered free places on the English presessional programme. She has been studying at the English Language Teaching Unit since October and also took part in the launch of Leicester University of Sanctuary where she recited some of her poems.

This collection of poetry is titled 'Birds Without Sky' and is inspired by Malka's journey into exile. At the launch, Malka will be reading her moving and vivid poems about war-torn Iraq, amongst other topics. In her forward, Carol Leeming writes, "I warmly commend this book for its beauty and enduring strong, soulful humanity".

This launch is open to all and free to attend. It is on Wednesday 21 February, 7-9pm at Leicester Central Library, Bishop Street, Leicester LE1 6AA.  Copies of Malka's book will be on sale, and all proceeds go to charity.
