Money to support NHS Charities Together

When Varsity - the annual sporting competition between Leicester and De Montfort University - had to be cancelled due to coronavirus, Thomas Slade, first year accounting and finance student, and member of the Leicester Longhorns American football team, wanted to do something to show support for the NHS.

Thomas said: "I wanted to undertake some sort of sporting challenge to raise money for the NHS considering the tireless work that they’ve put in for this country during the pandemic. This was met with complete support for our club as the consensus was that it was the least we could do."

Leicester Longhorns' initial challenge was to run, walk or cycle a marathon distance by Tuesday 9 June. However, as they were so successful, they teamed up with the American football team at De Montfort University to travel the distance from the opening NFL game of the season to the Superbowl: 1,028 miles, in friendly competition. As of Wednesday 20 May,

The challenge idea has spread to other sports clubs at the two universities, with over 30 taking part in total, raising over £1,300.

The other teams and clubs involved in challenges are basketball, lacrosse, rugby league, women's rugby, cycling, cheer and stunt, equestrian and polo, netball, tae kwan do, rugby, swimming and water polo, dodgeball, running and athletics, boat and mountaineering.

Thomas added: "“Being able to raise money for such a great cause is a privilege and to be able to do it with our rivals whilst also having some healthy competition makes it all the more exciting. As well as this, the challenges that all of the societies are undertaking are allowing people to get out in the fresh air which will be helping their states of mind in what is a difficult time, so with a lot of these challenges occurring around and during Mental Health Awareness Week we are also addressing this important week”.

Fellow club member, Lewis Cook, a third year financial economics student, commented: "“This has been a great event as it’s allowed members from all teams, University of Leicester and De Montfort University, to connect together to achieve a goal of raising money for a great cause”
