Kindness within the University community

"Be the change you want to see in the world"

With lots of stories in the media about individuals supporting their community, we know there must be lots of you doing the same. Let us know how you’re helping others and send us pictures if you can – we’ll include some in the next issue of The Citizen.

In the days before we closed, two campus collection points for food and hygiene items were inundated with items after a last minute appeal.

Richard Gamble, a colleague in the maintenance team, organised collection points for the Hygiene Bank across the University. Richard said: “Thanks go to the health and wellbeing team who have kindly sponsored the posters and to our Vice-Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah who has endorsed the campaign.”

Items most needed included sanitary products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shaving kits, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, shower gel and washing powder. Richard was able to make a bumper donation to the charity before the University closed. He will be collecting again once the University reopens.

Colleagues have also supported others with a foodbank collection point, on campus, for the Malcolm Arcade food bank in Leicester city centre. The team were also able to make a significant donation before we closed.

Dr Cara Dobbing, Library Assistant, has been helping with the collection and will be opening it again as soon as she is able. The collection point is in the David Wilson library.

Items the food bank usually need are UHT milk, tinned tomatoes, tinned veg, tinned fish, tinned meat, tinned fruit, rice, pasta, cereals, one litre cooking oil, tea, coffee and sugar. The collection point will also accept monetary donations – this may be useful if you’d like to donate but are struggling to source items.

For more information about the charities – both of which are still operating at the moment – head to The Hygiene Bank and Action Homeless.
