Celebrate 100 years since the University's founding.

On 1 September, staff, students, alumni and the public gathered in Centenary Square to see President and Vice-Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah officially launch the start of our University’s Centenary celebrations. Now we’re getting ready to celebrate the date the University first opened its doors in 1921 with just a Principal at its helm, three lecturers and eleven students.

Monday 4 October – our 100th birthday

We’ll celebrate the day by inviting you to join us in Centenary Square from 11am-3pm for a truly global get together. The Marquee will become home to a host of events throughout the day.

The Citizens of Change Volunteering Programme

We’ll celebrate you, our Citizens of Change, through our Volunteering Programme. At the University of Leicester, we are diverse in our makeup but united in our ambition to pursue knowledge that has the power to transform. Our world-changing research improves and enriches lives and drives our approach to education.

The VC will formally launch our Citizens of Change Volunteering Programme at 12pm, which will enable our students, staff and alumni to come together to assert positive change within our local and global communities. We’ll provide you with new opportunities to volunteer and encourage staff to take up their volunteering days, two days away from work to take part in volunteering activities. Make the volunteering pledge and sign up to our volunteering programme on the day.

Celebrating our global impact

We'll also celebrate our global connections with alumni and partners around the world including international recruitment partners and institutional partners working with us on study abroad, exchange, joint research and other forms of collaboration and the Leicester International Institute, Dalian University of Technology.

Proud of our diverse culture

And we’ll demonstrate the footprint of our alumni across 6 continents and highlight the importance and diversity of our key institutional partnerships, showing the truly global reach of our University. Make your mark on our interactive map to share your own international influences, and plot your future international travel and career aspirations.

Don’t forget to step outside the marquee and hang a birthday wish on one of our trees on the Attenborough Tower lawn.

Cultivating the campus of the future

We’ll be kick-starting our next Centenary by planting the first of 100 new trees on campus. From 12-12.30pm, the VC will be joined by the Students’ Union President, Rhiannon Jenkins, and International Officer, Laxman Prabhu, to plant the first of these trees on Attenborough Tower Lawn.

Our Centenary tree is an approximately ten-year-old, 15ft tall Liquidambar Styraciflua, a sweet gum, which was chosen for it’s colour – turning flame-like in Autumn – and its shape, mirroring the Attenborough Tower and the other trees in Centenary Square. The other 99 trees will be a mixture of species, but include a Magnolia to symbolise our partnership with the Dalian University of Technology.

Share your photo on the day to win a birthday present from Nada, the new zero waste shop on campus

To make the day even more memorable, we’re running a Centenary photo competition. Simply come down on the day, snap a picture and upload it to Instagram using the tag #UoL100 and be in with a chance to win a present from Nada. If you’re successful, we’ll DM you and arrange a time for you to come and collect your present.
