Fun and food at the Sustainability Festival

On Wednesday 8 June from 12noon to 6pm we are turning our Brookfield campus green for the day with the University of Leicester Sustainability Festival.

The 8 June is national Environment Day and on the day we will celebrating the work of our student volunteers and groups by putting on a programme full of fun activities and food, with a free BBQ from 12.30pm offering vegan and vegetarian options as well as the usual fare.

Students involved in, or interested in environmental projects can get into the summer spirit with our bungee run, face painting, paddling pool and team games, and for staff there’s a ‘cake off’ with homemade cakes available to buy and all proceeds going to the Bumblebee Trust.

There will be a drumming workshop, quiz and our student Sustainability Awards will be handed out from 4pm.

Ahead of the day, on Sunday 5 June, our students will be helping to build 'Bug Hotels', replicas of insect natural habitats on the Fielding Johnson Building lawn at the University and at Blackthorn Manor, Oadby, Leicester. We already have two at our Brookfield Campus, meaning that when complete we will have four 'Bug Hotels' on our grounds, helping to keep the environment and ecosystem healthy.

On a serious note, it’s been a great year for environmental groups at the University with the student-led Hungry for Change growing project becoming self-sustaining, the Environmental Action Society working hard on campaigns, and our SEED fund projects and Sustainable Development Programme having 30 students gaining our programme certificate. The Sustainability Festival is a great way to say ‘Thanks’ and ‘Well done’.
