Fielding Johnson car park to become central campus square
Over the last six months we have been trialling a closure of the Fielding Johnson car park to assess the impact on staff and visitors.
We have made the decision to close the car park permanently and redevelop the area to provide a fantastic central space for events.
Recent events held on the space, which include Freshers’ Week activities, the Festival of Careers and the Christmas Market, have shown the potential for the transformation of the area to hold bigger and better events and activities.
The University Leadership Team have provided funds to redevelop the former car park into a magnificent multi-use venue with the ability to easily erect marquees and hold a wide variety of events showcasing some of the very best of Leicester.
Not only this, it will link a number of buildings and spaces at the heart of campus, and provide a much improved shared area for socialising, relaxing and studying.
Work on the redevelopment will start in Spring 2016, with work continuing through to August. There will be no noisy works during the exam period, and while there may be some short-term disruption, the end result will be a beautiful new square at the centre of campus which will provide an immediate improvement to both staff and student experience.
Disabled parking bays will be provided elsewhere on Central Campus
