Support our students aiming to raise awareness about female education

Educate Our Girls is a student-led initiative aimed at raising awareness about the lack of education for young girls in rural regions in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. The aim is to raise £5,000 by May in order to sponsor a girl through education. So far, over £1,000 has been raised.

In addition to sponsoring education, the project aims to run mentorship programmes in order to ensure that the underprivileged group of girls are encouraged to continue with their education.

The campaign is founded by Adila Tokini Darego, a student in her second year of Law at the University. Akila moved to the UK four years ago after her GCSEs from Nigeria, in order to pursue a law degree here in the UK. Akila is supported by a group of equally passionate students. She says: I started this project because as I grew up, I realised the disparities in the educational level between boys and girls in my community (Rivers State, Nigeria) was very troubling. In Kano for instance, which is located in the northern part of Nigeria, research has found that only 4% of women can read and write. This is why we are working towards changing the narrative, one girl at a time.’

They are accepting donations online.

The group will be available Mondays 12pm-2pm, Tuesdays 3pm-5pm and Thursdays 3pm-6pm in the Queens Hall Foyer in the Percy Gee Building, readily available to accept donations and talk to you about the project, answering any questions that you may have.

You can keep up to date with the progress and upcoming events on Twitter and Facebook.
