Last week, the team at the University's Danielle Brown Sports Centre got in touch to ask for your help. They're raising money for the Brain Tumour charity, a charity very close to their heart due to the shock diagnosis of one of their teammates. In early 2021, Alex Lyon, a young father of two and an integral member of the Sport and Active Life team, was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.

Since discovering Alex's diagnosis, the team have organised a charity event at Stoughton Road Playing Fields, Oadby, on Bank Holiday Monday 30 August 2021. The event aims to raise awareness of brain tumours and help towards finding a cure for future generations.

Aaron Spencer, Duty Manager at the Danielle Brown Sports Centre, said:

"Alex was the real hero amongst us. He's full of energy, spirit and motivation, and the one you would go to if you needed help with anything. His story has been published recently through his wife, Gemma, in the Leicester Mercury, the Mirror and in the Daily Mail.

"Our hope is to raise funds for the Brain Tumour charity in support of Alex by running a charity football match in which we envisage Alex kicking the game off. Alongside this we are hoping to have food and drink available, a tombola stall, mini competitions such as a penalty shoot-out and a raffle in which we have some major prizes, such as a signed Leicester City FC and Leicester Tigers shirt. We are also hoping to have the charity there on the day to represent, raise awareness and provide information about how to support them in the future."

You can support the event by donating money to the Brain Tumour charity through a Just Giving page set up for the event, or by joining the event's Facebook group and helping spread the word through your own channels.

"We are and I’m sure Alex and his family would be extremely grateful for any support you can give," says Aaron. "No matter how big or small."
