New smoke and vape shelters being installed

Today is National No Smoking Day. We’re marking the event with a campaign to encourage more considerate smoking. From September 2020, we’ll be asking everyone who would like to smoke or vape on campus to use one of the new shelters.

The results of our recent survey told us that an overwhelming majority of people would like to see designated areas for smoking. Passive smoking was noted as a particular problem.

In response to the feedback, over the summer we’ll be installing separate shelters for smoking and vaping across the university. And from the beginning of the new term – September 2020 – we’d like to encourage all smokers to only smoke or vape in one of the new purpose-built shelters.

The smoke and vape shelters will be at the main University Road campus and the new Business School on our Brookfield site on London Road. The shelters will be purpose built – they will offer shelter from the weather, proper disposal points, good lighting and be in a visible location to ensure everyone can feel safe when they’re using them.

We’d like to say thank you for being a considerate smoker. By using the shelters, everyone can look forward to fresher air on campus.
