Leicester on the shortlist for BUCS Award success

Our commitment to ensuring our sporting activities, programmes and opportunities are inclusive and accessible to all students has been recognised by the British Universities and College Sports Awards with a shortlist at their annual awards ceremony. For the Sports and Active Life team removing barriers for students to engage in sports has been a priority. Research conducted by them prior to the 2019/20 academic year demonstrated that the costs of sport and lack of diversity discouraged students participating in physical activity

Students were supported financially through an inclusion fund in partnership with Student Support Services and Widening Participation team and free Let’s Do Leicester sessions, raising engagement with international students and those from BAME backgrounds. Additional measures included 200 committee members undertaking inclusion and bias training, clubs campaigning for Black History Month, Pride Week and International Men’s Day, as well as women’s only lifting sessions.

Upon the removal of these barriers:

  • 46% of students accessing the inclusion fund were from BAME backgrounds.
  • 60% of the students were from the lowest undergraduate participation neighbourhoods.
  • The sporting offer at the University of Leicester now has 51% engagement from women.
  • 44% of students engaged in sport and physical activity in 2019/20, a 4% increase from 2018/19.
  • 100% of all Team Leicester clubs have a wellbeing officer with 50% combining the role with wellbeing and inclusion.
  • 54% of women attending the women’s only workouts were from BAME backgrounds.
  • 66% of students in the social sport programme Let’s Do Leicester are from BAME backgrounds with 12% declaring a disability.

Matt Weir, Head of Sport and Active Life, said:

“We are continuously taking active steps to make sport at Leicester a more welcoming and inclusive community. It's a great achievement to see the work of the Sport and Active Life team and the Students Union recognised. It is a testament to our students who display huge passion in helping to create a more inclusive and diverse environment.”

Watch the winners be revealed live on Tuesday 8 December at 5.00pm.
