Leicester Student Magazine – the news outlet run by students, for students.

Access to news and information helps you to shape your thoughts, feelings and views. We spoke to Ella, Secretary for Leicester Student Magazine about their recent rebrand, the topics they are covering and roles they are currently recruiting for.

The Leicester Student Magazine is an online news outlet, that is run by the University’s students, for the University’s students. Featuring articles around arts and culture, lifestyle, fiction and poetry and opinion-based articles, this society aims to cover all areas of news, keeping University of Leicester students informed.

Many may know that Leicester Student Magazine has undergone a recent rebrand, starting from scratch from what used to be known as Galaxy Press. Ella commented: “We felt that Galaxy Press (the previous magazine name) had a lot more to offer, but we still wanted to continue the legacy of the student newspaper, which has been an active society since 1957. We decided that a rebrand to LSM with a new website and a more modern look would appeal to the student body and wider community.

Although as a society they have rebranded, their aim is to continue to be an outlet that is representative of Leicester’s student voice. When asked what topics LSM would like to touch upon, Ella responded with “absolutely anything!”

We want to be representative of the student voice and so we are looking to feature a variety of topics and interests to appeal to everybody. We're looking for writers in categories such as arts and culture, sports, politics, science and technology, and lifestyle, as well as featuring fiction and poetry pieces too. We are also keen to feature student opinion and run a University Life section of the site, where there are opportunities for members to review local businesses, cover fundraising and volunteering efforts and write about issues that affect them.

The news outlet aims to feature writers from across the student body and submissions are open to every student. However, as a member of this society, you gain extra benefits. Ella added: “Regular writers who have a membership will be invited to various events and socials over the year, including guest talks and workshops in collaboration with other societies. At the moment all of these events are set to be virtual in line with government and SU guidelines but we're working hard to make sure socials can still run as much as possible”.

Currently, The Leicester Student Magazine are looking to hire zealous students who have a passion for writing. “We are looking mainly for writers and contributors. No previous experience is necessary - we're just looking for a passion for what you're writing about. We are also looking to expand our editing team, so for students looking for more hands-on editing and journalism experience, this is an ideal opportunity to put on your CV.”

If you are looking to join a society, no matter your year of study, consider getting involved with the Leicester Student Magazine. You can check out more information on their society here. For all updates, head over to their socials on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
