We Are Black History event

Black leaders will share their unique success stories to inspire Leicester students as part of We Are Black History.

The event will also showcase top tips to boost your career and employment opportunities in companies committed to diversity, on Tuesday, between 3.00pm and 5.00pm.

Leicester alumni Linda Kasonde (pictured) and Michelle Codrington-Rogers will take centre stage.

Linda is Vice President for Africa in the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, owner of LCK Chambers, and founder of the Chapter One Foundation – a charity which promotes and protects human rights in Zambia.

Michelle Codrington-Rogers is the President of the NASUWT union and teaches citizenship at Cherwell School Academy.

Addressing the importance of the event, Michelle Codrington-Rogers said: “As the first Black President in the history of NASUWT it is important that Black and minority students see the options they have in relation to career paths, especially in the education sector.”

Employer panellists will include representatives from American Express, Bright Network, Cognizant, Enterprise-Rent-A-Car, GSK, Sky and Tesco.

Lamin Kassama, Area Manager from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, commented: “We must ensure we are hiring a workforce that mirrors our demographics and the communities we serve. We are passionate about supporting Black students, to give them the best opportunities possible as they enter the world of work.”

Johnson Adeyanju from Bright Network added: “As a Black, immigrant, care leaver who grew up on a council estate I’m all too familiar with the barriers that prevent black talent from excelling and keen to play any role I can to break through these.”

Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor, stated: “This event speaks to the very core of what we stand for as an institution – a diverse and inclusive university that seeks to empower people to change society for the better.

Initiatives like this are crucial if we are to challenge and change decades, even centuries, of injustice and bring about a new tomorrow.”
