Call for Applications for the Dragon 100 Young Chinese Leaders Forum 2012

The University of Leicester has been invited to nominate candidates of Chinese ethnicity to take part in the Dragon 100 Young Chinese Leaders’ Forum 2012, organised by the Dragon Foundation in Hong Kong. The programme consists of three days in Hong Kong and a five-day study tour in Tianjin and Beijing (full dates 5-12 August 2012). The theme is 'Innovation and Development in Tianjin: Manifestation of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan.'

In Hong Kong, participants will attend ceremonies and plenary sessions addressed by distinguished speakers. They will join discussions on the theme, Chinese history, culture, the roles and positioning of Hong Kong in China’s strategies as well as, the recent development of Hong Kong. They will also visit spots of planning and infrastructure in Hong Kong, and attend social activities with other groups of youth leaders. Activities in Hong Kong will be conducted in English.

In Tianjin & Beijing, participants will meet local government officials and attend seminars, which discuss issues related to recent development in China, by guest speakers. Delegates will also visit major historical and cultural development projects and sites related to the innovation and development in Mainland China. Cultural and social activities will also be arranged. Events during the study tour will be conducted in both English and Putonghua.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • have Chinese ethnicity
  • be aged between 18 and 35 years old
  • have demonstrated outstanding academic and non-academic achievements
  • have demonstrated excellent leadership skills in extra-curricular activities and/or community service
  • be able to fund their own return airfare from the UK to Hong Kong (including airport taxes). All additional fees and costs are covered by the Dragon Foundation.

Selection process

The University of Leicester will nominate suitable candidates to take part in the Study Tour.
A panel of distinguished academics and professionals, as well as Directors of the Dragon Foundation, will then select candidates to make up the final delegation. The selection panel will look for candidates who are outstanding academically or professionally, are award recipients or are exceptionally talented in a non-academic area, e.g. sport, arts, music. Candidates should also have a consistent record of involvement in service to the community or in extra-curricular activities.

Nominees will be informed of the results by late June 2012.

Application deadline

If you are interested in taking part and feel that you meet the above criteria, please email Charlotte Smith in the International Office at ces9@le.ac.uk by 17.00 on Monday 14 May. Please also include a short statement (of no more than 250 words) stating your reasons for wanting to attend and demonstrating how you meet the criteria for selection.

Supporting documents and an application form will need to be provided by nominees before their names can be submitted to the Dragon Foundation. Applicants will therefore need to be available during the week commencing 14 May to complete the required documentation in person at the International Office.
