Closing date for entries is Saturday 31 October.

First year students who have overcome adversity are eligible to apply for £1,000 Centenary Scholarship to support them in their studies and living expenses.

The bursaries were created to commemorate the founding of the University nearly 100 years ago by members of the local community, to honour loved ones who served, and in many cases died, in World War I.

The scholarships recognise students, who started their undergraduate degree in October 2020, who have overcome adversity or made sacrifices in pursuit of their goals, in service to something greater than themselves.

Previous recipients of the scholarship have acknowledged the pivotal role it has played in their university experience.

Audrey Adeoti, who is completing an international relations degree, commented: “As an asylum seeker it has been difficult financially to fund myself in the university. However, by receiving the scholarship I was able to concentrate on my academic activities rather than my financial instability. Therefore I was able to give my studies the maximum concentration which it deserved.”

Nursing student James Cooke added: “The greatest benefit for me has been to stress less. As a mature student, running a household and raising a family is very difficult. To be able just to relax a little bit makes me very happy.”

Applications should be submitted by Saturday 31 October on our website.
