When coronavirus altered the University of Leicester Boat Club’s charity fundraising plans, they instead decided to share their gratitude towards NHS staff and volunteers by taking on the shaved head challenge.

Aidan Norman, Secretary (top row, second from left), a third year history student, said: “The NHS seemed like a natural choice in the current situation we find ourselves in. It’s an organisation we can sometimes take for granted and in situations like this it is vital that we show as much support as we can muster.”

Their original £100 target was met within a day and to date they have raised over £560, for NHS Charities Together.

So far, nine members of the squad have attempted the challenge, including the coveted mohawk look!

Vice President, Joe Lewis (top row, first left), a third year physics student, said: “The NHS staff members are working selflessly during this pandemic to help save as many lives as possible. Being trapped inside we wanted to show a visible sign of support for the risk they’re taking and to show how appreciative we are. We also were just eager to see Aidan shave his head!”

Aidan is also keen to encourage other students and societies to fundraise. He commented: “I would absolutely encourage other clubs to start fundraisers of a similar fashion. This sort of fundraiser is not only a fantastic way of financially and morally supporting those who are sacrificing their own safety for the sake of others, or supplying aid to those who might be vulnerable at this time, but it is also a brilliant way of making a sense of community while we’re all isolated indoors. Our head shaving antics has meant there is constant chat among our senior men, our socials are alive with feedback and discussions, and this all contributes to people pulling together and acting as a community despite being separated by quarantine."
