Improving our student experience

We are developing several projects to enhance the student experience, including the Student Lifecycle Change Programme, creation of a student services centre, curriculum transformation, Fabulous First Year, My UoL student app, and Reflect lecture capture.

Current projects that focus on improving the student experience are:

Student Lifecycle Change Programme

From application through to graduation and beyond, we have been working with our staff and students to take an entirely new approach to the administrative activities which support our students' experience.

Student Services Centre

We are creating a new home for our student services in the Charles Wilson Building. The Centre is being created after positive feedback from students last year, and aims to reduce confusion, give students one reception area which is able to deal with the majority of their queries and ensure that we give a high level of service for all students. The foyer is being redeveloped over summer 2016 and staff will be moving into the building ahead of the new academic year.

Curriculum transformation

Based on student feedback, we are restructuring our academic year, reducing the number of exams students take and standardising module credits across all our programmes.

Fabulous First Year

The Fabulous First Year is a concept coined by Mark Peel. Its purpose is help students to develop a sense of belonging at the University of Leicester, from the point of confirmation, raise awareness of existing activities by putting an umbrella over them, encourage students to engage in dialogue with the university and to enhance communication that students receive.

The Fabulous First Year groups together a series of initiatives and opportunities already delivered by the university: these initiatives are extra-curricular options that students are able to opt in to if they wish to. It includes: the peer mentoring scheme, something for everything sport, the residence life programme, career development support embedded in the curriculum, involvement in community projects, cultural links including the Botanical Gardens and Attenborough Arts Centre, curriculum development, and My UoL app.

My UoL student app

Students can download My UoL – the university's app – by searching for MyUoL on the App or Play store. It is also available as a desktop version at There is not currently a staff version of the app.

Reflect lecture capture

Reflect is the University’s lecture capture system. It allows you to automatically record a teaching session, and make the recording available for students to view online.

Attendance Management for Students

A new way of registering attendance at timetabled taught events has been introduced at the University and is being launched for all campus-based taught students from the start of their Autumn Semester 2016. The Attendance Management System (AMS) is an in-house developed system which will replace existing attendance registration processes. Our project web pages provide more information and support.
