An Emeritus Professor is involved in a European Commission led review.

Following requests from the Commissioner for Health and the Commissioner for Research and Innovation, the European Commission is conducting a Refit Evaluation of Pesticides Legislation with the objective of performing an evidence-based assessment of the implementation of the current regulations on plant protection products and pesticides residues.

Science Advice for Policy by the European Academies (SAPEA) - the Royal Society is one of these European Academies - have been asked to contribute to the evidence gathering process, and have contacted Professor Colin Ockleford, formerly of the University of Leicester, to help with the rapid evidence review.

SAPEA is part of the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) which provides independent, interdisciplinary and evidence-based scientific advice on policy issues to the European Commission. Invited as an expert on good scientific practice to assess toxicity of plant production products to human health on account of a “keen interest, expertise and experience in toxicological risk assessment” he will collaborate with others at six meetings in Brussels on this pressing topic for the High-Level Group scientific opinion over the summer.
