Renowned obstetrician Professor Philip Baker to join Leicester from July 2015

The President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Boyle is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Philip Baker to the positions of Head of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of Medicine.

Professor Baker is a clinical academic who has published over 300 scientific articles and seventeen textbooks. He has held leading positions in medical schools and research centres at universities in the UK and overseas.

Professor Baker will lead the College and, working with colleagues, will facilitate the creation and implementation of the College’s vision, strategic and operational plans. As a member of the University Leadership Team, Professor Baker will also have a key role in shaping and influencing the University’s strategy.

Professor Boyle commented: “We have reviewed all facets of Professor Baker’s extensive track record in great detail, and we are confident in his abilities to lead the College at what promises to be an exciting time.  We are delighted that he has accepted the position, rather than take up offers from competing institutions.”

Professor Baker said: “The University of Leicester is renowned for the quality and innovation of its teaching and for world class research.  I am honoured to have the opportunity to work with such talented staff and students.”

Professor Baker trained in Nottingham, Cambridge and Pittsburgh before taking Chairs of obstetrics in Nottingham and then Manchester.  He led both Manchester’s successful bid for an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the Manchester medical school, before moving to head the Medical School in Edmonton, Canada.

He remained in Edmonton as special advisor to the Provost, before being appointed as the Director of the National Centre of Growth and Development in New Zealand.  During this time he also directed a pregnancy research centre in Chongqing, China, and the Chinese Government appointed him as a National Distinguished Professor.

Professor Baker is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in both New Zealand and the UK. He was principal author of the position paper on ‘Health of Women and Children’ that was considered at the 2010 G8 Summit.

In joining the leadership team in Leicester, Professor Baker will be returning to his childhood roots; he was born and bred in Leicester and retains a strong affinity for the city, especially the football team, and he will be delighted not to have to wake up early on Sunday mornings to watch the games from New Zealand.

Professor Baker will commence as Head of College Elect from July 2015. Professor Alison Goodall, the Interim Head of College, will continue in this role, working with Professor Baker, until October 2015.
