A University of Leicester Researcher is encouraging others to join her in taking a stand against heart disease by signing up for the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Calke Abbey Walk, taking place on 6 October 2013.

Dr. Emma Chung, a BHF-funded researcher, will be lacing up her walking boots to give something back to the nation’s heart charity.

Emma said: “Working as a BHF Research Fellow, it is really rewarding to get involved with BHF events to help continue raising funds for projects like mine. There are 2.3 million people living with coronary heart disease in the UK and through the various BHF funded research projects we are determined to put a stop to the devastation heart disease brings. My research is looking at how we can reduce the risk of injury to the brain during heart surgery.

“It is down to the efforts of the great British public who fundraise for the BHF through events like the Calke Abbey Walk that we are able to continue our life-saving research. I am really looking forward to taking part in this event with so many of our supporters.”

Sophie Jardine, BHF Fundraising Manager, added: “We’re so grateful to Emma and her colleagues for their enthusiasm and for signing up to take part in the walk.

“Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer. Events like the Calke Abbey Walk will help fund the breakthroughs of the future to change those statistics.”

Walkers can choose between a 9-mile walk or 2-mile family route and entry is £10 for adults, £5 for children and free for under-6’s. To take part please register online at bhf.org.uk/calke or contact the events team on 0845 130 8663 or frsupport@bhf.org.uk.
