New roles for members of University Council

New Chairman and Treasurer appointed with effect from 1 August 2013

The University of Leicester has made two new appointments to the leadership of Council, the governing body of the University.

Bridget Towle, formerly University Treasurer, is to succeed Roger Bettles in the role of Chairman, while David Moore has been appointed as the new University Treasurer.

Both roles will be effective from 1 August.

Bridget TowleBridget Towle joined Council in 2000.  After graduating from Exeter in Economics, Law and Politics she taught with VSO in Uganda. On returning home she joined a knitted garment manufacturing plc having studied textile technology and later management at Leicester Polytechnic. She became the firm's marketing director and then joint managing director. Later she was elected Chief Guide and Chair of the Board of Girlguiding UK for a period of five years.

She is the Vice President of Girlguiding UK and this year was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

She was awarded the CBE in 2001 and holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Exeter and Loughborough. She has served as the University's Treasurer since the beginning of 2009.

David MooreDavid Moore joined the Council of the University in 2009. The bulk of his professional career, 32 years, was with Citibank where he spent 28 years working internationally. He returned to the UK in 2008 as a Managing Director for Citi Private Bank’s Operations and Technology Division overseeing activities in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and Asia before retiring at the end of 2011.

David was a Public Member of Network Rail between 2008 and 2011.  He is a Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chairman of the Milton Keynes NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Trust’s Finance and Investment Committee. He also acts as Independent Auditor for the Welton Townlands Trust.

David holds a BA in Social Sciences from the University of Leicester as well as an MBA from the University of Liverpool.

Council is the governing body of the University, made up of members of University staff and lay representatives. It is there to ensure that the University is being managed effectively and legislative commitments are being met.

David said: “As a former student it is an honour and a privilege to be given the opportunity to make a contribution to the continued success of our University; I look forward to the challenges ahead, especially in the context of an ever changing higher education landscape.”
