A project run by the University has been shortlisted for an award recognising new voices in literature.

'Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs): A Tribute to Joe Orton' has been shortlisted in the Wildcard category of the Saboteur Awards, which are sponsored by the Arts Council England.

The project was run by Dr Emma Parker to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Leicester-born playwright Joe Orton. Together with filmmaker Chris Shepherd, they created a short animated film inspired by the prank letters of complaint that Orton penned under the pseudonym ‘Edna Welthorpe’.

Acclaimed writers and artists paid tribute to Orton’s subversive comic genius by writing new Edna Welthorpe letters and they also launched a creative writing competition to teach young people about Joe Orton and satire.

The film was screened and the letters were read at Latitude Festival and at a special event at The Little Theatre, Leicester, on 9 August 2017.

The winner is chosen by public vote and you can vote by visiting the Saboteur Awards website. Voting closes on 9 May and the awards will be announced on the 19 May.
