Staff and first years will receive a free copy of the Truman Capote classic to promote the value and pleasure of reading beyond your interests and subject area.

As part of our new Fabulous First Year initiative, we are launching Read at Leicester. Thanks to this project we will be gifting all staff and first year undergraduates a copy of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. We would like to invite you and your staff to be involved in this reading venture, encouraging discussion and engaging in an intellectual experience shared by staff and students.

You may have seen the article in the Times Higher earlier this year which included observations from Professor Jo Brewis and other fellow scholars, drawing attention to the value and pleasure of sustained reading and the importance for students of reading beyond disciplinary boundaries.

Similar reading initiatives in Nottingham and Kingston have had a number of beneficial outcomes; creating a sense of community, opportunities for informal discussion, serious academic expectations and opportunities to include chosen texts in induction and/or in teaching and learning activities.

We hope you take up the invitation; the more students and staff who are reading the book, the more successful the project will be.

For more information on how you can be involved please contact Harinder Matharu, visit our website or join the Read at Leicester Yammer Group.
