Nominations for honorary degrees and for the national honours system

Deadline for nominations is 9 October

    1. Honorary degrees

Members of the University are invited to propose candidates for the award of honorary degrees. Nominations should be made by 9 October 2015 to Nigel Siesage (nigel.siesage@le.ac.uk). Please ensure that the subject line of emails clearly states “Honorary Degree nomination”.  Nominations will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Board and it should be noted that the number of awards made in any year is very limited.

Candidates should have made an outstanding contribution on a local, national or international scale. The contribution may be to the advancement of the candidate’s discipline or field of work, or it may be to the community, to society or to the University.  It is desirable to have a connection to Leicester but if not, the candidate must be an outstanding individual and widely recognised in his or her own field. More details of the criteria adopted by the Honorary Degrees Board may be found at http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/governance/committees/senate/honorary

A full case must be made by the person nominating the candidate.  This includes:

      • detailed reasons for the nomination
      • a brief curriculum vitae (to the extent that this is possible without consulting the candidate)
      • other background information that may be useful (e.g. Wikipedia or Who's Who entry)
      • the candidate’s contact details

Without this information it will not be possible to put the nomination forward to the Board.

It is essential that the candidate not be aware that the nomination is being considered.

      2. National honours

The University is occasionally asked to consider making nominations for national honours, or to support nominations being made other organisations. These may be for employees or graduates of the University, or for others whose work is well known to the University.

Anyone who wishes the University to initiate a nomination or to support an existing nomination is asked to notify Nigel Siesage (nigel.siesage@le.ac.uk) by 9 October 2015. Please ensure that the subject line of emails clearly states “National honours nomination”.

        The case should state:

        • detailed reasons for the nomination
        • connection of the candidate with the University
        • other background information that may be useful (e.g. Wikipedia or Who's Who entry)

Cases will be considered by the President & Vice-Chancellor in the first instance, and he will take other advice as appropriate. Please note that very few nominations will actually be supported.

It is essential that the candidate not be aware that the potential nomination is being considered.
