Two of our staff in the School of History, Politics and International Relations have been recognised this year

Two people associated with the University were among the recipients in the recently announced New Year’s Honours list for 2018, both based within our School of History, Politics and International Relations.

Stuart Ball, Emeritus Professor of Modern British History, received a CBE for services to Political History. Professor Ball’s research has focused on British political history during the twentieth century, especially in the period between the two World Wars.  His main focus has been on the Conservative Party, with recent publications including Portrait of a Party: The Conservative Party in Britain 1918-1945 and Dole Queues and Demons - British Election Posters from the Conservative Party Archive.

Dr Martin Stern, who works closely with our Stanley Burton Centre, also received an MBE for his services to Holocaust education. A survivor of the Holocaust and a retired medical doctor, Dr Stern has delivered many lectures for the Stanley Burton Centre over the years. Reporting on his award, the Leicester Mercury said that he was ‘very grateful and honoured’.
