We are pleased to announce that Professor Emma Smith will be the Widening Participation Lead for the University as part of her existing role in the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

This will help ensure that we make progress on our Strategic Plan commitments and strengthen our contribution to widening participation in higher education and the role of universities in fostering social mobility.

Emma will work closely with the leads in the other colleges to maintain the strong networks that underpin our approach to widening participation.

Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) and also working with colleagues in the Division of External Relations, Emma will work to raise our external profile of widening participation and link it to broader issues around access, equality, diversity and social mobility.

Professor Mark Peel, Provost, said: “Our success in widening participation to higher education will continue to rely upon the dedication and imagination of our staff; in her role as Lead, one of Emma’s most important tasks is to ensure that we have strong networks and frequent opportunities for sharing ideas.”
