New DPVC to develop international research partnerships

Professor Paul Van Gardingen has been appointed to the role of Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor, International and Research Development, and will start on 1 June 2017.

The DPVC, International and Research Development role will provide strategic academic leadership in this vital area which requires detailed knowledge of the funding landscape, excellent contacts with research funders and policy makers and substantial prior experience in leading international development research activities.

Paul has spent the last five years as Director of the £45m DFID/ESRC/NERC  programme on Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation, based at the University of Edinburgh where he held the UNESCO Chair in International Development.

Paul said: "I am excited to be joining the University of Leicester and working with colleagues and our international partners to build our portfolio of international and development research.I am extremely impressed about the work that Leicester is already delivering and  look forward to contributing to significant growth in research, it’s application and impact over the coming years.

"I have been very pleased to hear the enthusiasm that Leicester’s academics have for their international and development research and as an academic myself I am keen to contribute to enhancing Leicester’s delivery of world-class research that enhances society, the economy and environment around the world."
