It is with great sadness the the University has learnt of the death of Mrs Janet Bayliss on Thursday 19 January 2017.

Janet, also known as Jan, started to work at the University on 1 December 2004 as an Administrative Assistant in the Science Learning Centre East Midlands (SLCEM), which was based in the School of Education. Jan fitted in with the team immediately and although on a casual contract initially, she soon became a ‘regular fixture’.  Jan was always willing to give anything a go and always made visitors to the Centre feel welcome and comfortable. As the SLCEM expanded, she was deservedly offered a permanent contract and her colleagues will always remember her as a cheery antidote to the stresses of work and working in the Fraser Noble Building.

On 24 May 2014, Jan moved from SLCEM and joined the Research Support Office as Research Support Assistant.  Although working in a new environment, she was not afraid to learn new process and systems and although slightly reserved, was always ready to help with new queries.  She was a great colleague to work with; she was friendly, kind and always willing to go the extra mile. Jan enjoyed the stimulating environment of the University and placed great importance on customer care. Jan’s calm and helpful demeanour was noticeable in everything she did and will be greatly missed by the many staff at the University and outside who worked closely with her or came into contact with her.

Jan loved the outdoors especially the weekends away discovering the Norfolk coast in her beloved caravan. Jan is survived by two sons and a grandson whom she adored.  Her family, friends and colleagues will always remember her as a kind, good natured person with a big smile on her face.  These words are not enough to describe Jan. We do and will miss her greatly.

Jan's funeral will take place at Gilroes Cemetery, Groby Road, Leicester, LE3 9QG on Tuesday 7 February, starting at 1.30pm.  This will be followed by a ‘Celebration of Life’ at Birstall Golf Club, Station Rd, Birstall, Leicester LE4 3BB to which family, friends, and colleagues are invited.

Donations are being collected for Cancer Research UK, the family’s charity of choice. If you would like to make a donation please contact Louise Thompson in the Research and Enterprise Division on lkw7@le.ac.uk.

Our sincerest condolences go to Jan’s family and friends.
