New role for Professor Helen Atkinson.

We have appointed Professor Helen Atkinson CBE, FREng to the role of Interim Graduate Dean, succeeding Professor Sarah Hainsworth, who is about to take up the post just vacated by Helen as Head of Engineering, which she has held since 2012.

A recent Task & Finish Group recommended the creation of a Doctoral College at Leicester and the University Leadership Team aims to see this operational in time for the 2017-18 Academic Year. The Interim Graduate Dean will prepare the ground for the establishment of the College, including for the appointment of an academic head and professional service lead towards the end of this year. Helen will work to develop Leicester’s attractiveness for future DTPs and CDTs as well as carrying out the many and varied duties of the Graduate Dean.

Iain Gillespie, PVC Research and Enterprise, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Helen is taking on this role. She is a passionate advocate for the highest quality possible PGR experience and for the essential role in our research ecosystem that PGR students and early career researchers play.

"We need to be ambitious in our aspirations for our PGR/ECR community. As well as being our future, they are a vital part of our success. The plans for a doctoral college should allow us to make a step change in our offering and I am confident Helen will drive us quickly and effectively towards its successful establishment.”

Helen said: “I am very much looking forwards to working right across the University to lay strong foundations for the Doctoral College.”

Helen was previously the President of the Engineering Professors’ Council, the body which represents engineering in HE throughout the UK and is the current Chair of the Education and Skills Panel at the Royal Academy of Engineering. She chaired the £17 million project to rebuild the Percy Gee Students’ Union at Leicester between 2008 and 2010.
