The Actuarial Teachers and Researchers Conference 2018 took place on 30-31 July

Ross Parry, the Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Digital), and lead on the University’s digital strategy, introduced this years’ Actuarial Teachers and Researchers Conference (ATRC), held at College Court at the end of July. The annual two-day event allows academics, practitioners and professional bodies to exchange ideas on recent advances in actuarial research and education.

This year, the program focused on teaching sessions, professional skills sessions (a CDP requirement) and placed priority on allowing time for discussion. The conference culminated in five minute taster talks, delivered by PhD students, in front of both researchers and the Head of Research from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Topics for the conference were varied; from assisting students in an AI driven world, utilising technology in teaching and assessment, to discussing what the future holds for actuarial research. Throughout the conference, participants spoke about their early career experiences and discussed the challenges of switching from commercial roles to academia.
