Five departments within the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology are to be restructured into three new departments

Taking a lead from the University’s new strategic direction, some of you may be aware that the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology have decided to review the structure of their departments.

As a result of this, five departments will recombine to form three new ones. The affected departments are Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, Genetics and Psychology.

Genetics
Incorporating staff from the current departments of Genetics and Biology

Molecular and Cell Biology
Incorporating staff from the current departments of Biochemistry and Cell Physiology and Pharmacology

Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour
Incorporating staff from the current departments of Biology, Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, Psychology and the Ophthalmology group from Cardiovascular Sciences.

The new departments will come into existence on 1 August, and work has been ongoing within current departments to prepare for the restructure.

While these are significant changes in terms of College structure, there has been no reduction in staff as a result of these changes, and small adjustments to job roles have only taken place in one or two cases.

Other than a change in departmental assignment and, in some cases line-manager, the role and duties of the majority of affected staff will remain wholly or substantially the same, and they will normally continue to work from the same office and laboratory space.
