We are launching a scheme to be recognised as a University of Sanctuary, committed to welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

Leicester City of Sanctuary is a charity which aims to hold true to the multicultural and multi-ethnic ethos of the city itself, welcoming refugees and asylum seekers and integrating them into our city and community.

We are holding an event in the Attenborough Arts Centre on Wednesday 25 October between 11am and 2pm to mark the launch of our move to become a University of Sanctuary.

But what is a University of Sanctuary? The definition is an institution that 'Offers good practice in welcoming asylum seekers and refugees into the university community and fostering a culture of welcome and inclusion for all.'

Practically it means welcoming asylum seekers and refugees onto University courses, whether English Language or otherwise, and providing incentives and routes for them to get involved. As part of this we would like to find 'champions' across all departments within the University. We’re asking you to take three minutes or three hours, whatever you can spare, to come along and find out how you can get involved.

You can pick up Information about being a University of Sanctuary and have a chat to other staff about what we can do. There will be entertainment including music and poetry from refugees in Leicester, refreshments and other entertainment.

Phil Horspool, Director of the English Language Teaching Unit who are organising the event, said: “The University of Sanctuary steering group want to get a refugees and asylum seekers ‘champion’ in every department and we welcome anyone to come along and get involved. We’re hoping that the event will help launch our drive to become a University of Sanctuary by involving staff from across the whole of the campus, the local community and organisations working to help refugees and asylum seekers.”
